FROM MONTECATINI/MONTECARLO, TO PESCIA PASSING THROUGH COLLODI  ABOUT 20 KM / INTERMEDIATE / E-MTB / 1 DAY

There are less known places, which hide rare beauties, one of these is the medieval hill village of Montecarlo, as well as a DOC wine production area. You will reach it by bike from the Montecarlo railway station (coming from Montecatini) after filling up with energy by a tasting at a local farm. This will allow you to better tackle the climb that will take you to the town of Montecarlo, where a local guide who will show you the highlights of this small village (the Walls, the Church) and will open the doors of one of the smallest theaters in Italy (the Teatro dei Rassicurati).

You will leave Montecarlo to continue towards a the Monument Tree known as the “Quercione” or “Quercia delle Streghe” (Oak of the Witches), which seems to have inspired Carlo Lorenzini, known as Collodi, for the episode of the killers in Pinocchio tale. It’s about 20 meters high and with a branch diameter of approx. 40 meters this oak reaches the venerable age of almost 600 years old. To hug it, it is estimated that at least 5 people are needed.

From there, along a path of woods, olive groves and vineyards, you will reach the small hamlet of S. Gennaro (in some sections with steep slopes) but you will then be rewarded in going down to the valley towards Collodi, the town of Pinocchio tale. There you will have time for a quick lunch. Worth a visit are the Garden and Villa Garzoni, the Butterfly House and the Pinocchio Park. From the center of the town the so-called “Via della Fiaba”, starts a characteristic and demanding path in cobblestones that will lead you to Pescia, another charming town known for its flowers (its market is very active still today) and in the past, for its paper.

A few kilometers away, in the locality of Pietrabuona, there is the Paper Museum, testifying the ancient processing that flourished here in the 15th century. The sightseeing places in Pescia are: Piazza Mazzini, the Baroque style Cathedral and the Church of San Francesco.

Return by train from Pescia and return back the bikes.
